The future of the Land Registry
29th October 2009
On the 22nd October Land Registry has announced a five-year programme of reorganisation and transformation that will see us deliver efficiencies, whilst also ensuring we continue to deliver against the changing needs of our customers.
As a valued Land Registry customer we are writing to you to explain why we are making these proposals, how we value and would encourage your feedback and to reassure you that the changes will have no detrimental effect on the services we provide to you.
The property slump, which resulted in a substantial loss for us in the last financial year, has reinforced the need for rapid change. Our proposals will allow us to respond faster and more efficiently to future fluctuations in the market. Building as robust and sustainable an organisation as possible will allow us to be proactive rather than passive in the face of market changes and to be in good shape for a recovery in the property market.
We believe that the proposals will help create an organisation that can meet the challenges of a developing property market and that can continue to provide an outstanding service to its customers. Having looked at a range of possibilities we are proposing to close our local offices in Croydon, Peterborough, Portsmouth, Stevenage and Tunbridge Wells. We also intend embarking on a programme of outsourcing some of our support functions and selling surplus property. This would mean vacating our current Head Office building and moving to alternative smaller accommodation, still in central London.
We believe that the proposals will allow us to make far better use of our buildings and to create significant efficiency savings. Land Registry makes no call on taxpayers’ money but we expect cutting our costs should allow our fees to be reduced over the next five years.
We are launching a public consultation on the proposed closure of Croydon, Peterborough, Portsmouth, Stevenage and Tunbridge Wells. We want to ensure that we have considered the full impact of our proposals on our customers and partners, and would therefore welcome your feedback.
