LSC to cut 600 jobs
19th November 2008
The Legal Services Commission has announced that 600 jobs will go as part of a massive re-organizational and cost-cutting and exercise. The LSC indicate that job cuts will begin in mid-2009 and will be phased over 3/5 years.
Offices in Brighton, Cardiff, Cambridge, Reading, Leeds, Chester, Birmingham and Manchester will feel the cuts most. Whilst all of these will remain open they will operate with a ‘skeleton’ on-site presence, typically for relationship management and business analysis tasks.
The remaining staff, which will number 1100, will operate from five main offices – London, Liverpool, Bristol, South Tyneside and Nottingham. Of these centres four will process civil casework with the exception, Nottingham, handling criminal cases.
Legal aid solicitors have expressed doubts that there will be enough LSC staff left to handle the workload and recent experiences with LSC Online Services have not bred confidence in the new systems.
